BALDWIN CITY, Kan. — Southwestern College's flag football team wrapped up its regular season Thursday evening with a tough 51-14 road loss to Baker University at Liston Stadium in Baldwin City. The matchup marked the final Conference contest before the championship tournament.
The Lady Builders (6-6, 6-6) fell behind early as Baker (8-5, 7-2 ) used a balanced offensive attack to build a 26-0 lead by halftime. The Wildcats added 13 more points in the third quarter and closed out the game with two touchdowns in the fourth.
Southwestern responded late, as quarterback Kennedi Hayes connected with Teagan Smith for a 12-yard touchdown. Moments later, Mary Jones sparked the sideline with a 62-yard interception return for a score, cutting into the deficit.
Hayes finished 11-for-30 through the air for 101 yards and one touchdown, while the Builders were limited to 12 total rushing yards on the night. Jones also led the team defensively with four solo tackles and the pick-six.
While the result wasn't what the Builders hoped for, this matchup provided valuable experience ahead of the KCAC Championship tournament. Southwestern now shifts its focus to postseason play, aiming to regroup and make a strong push in the conference bracket.
Details regarding KCAC Championship seeding and kickoff times will be released in the coming days.
