NORTH NEWTON, Kan.— Southwestern College dominated Bethel College 68-0 in a conference matchup Wednesday night.
The Builders (6-4, 6-4) wasted little time, jumping out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter behind two touchdown passes from quarterback Kennedi Hayes. Hayes connected with Olivia Manfre for a 38-yard touchdown and then hit Manfre again for a 20-yard score.
Southwestern's defense also made its mark early, forcing turnovers and limiting Bethel (0-8, 0-8) to just 75 yards of total offense. In the second quarter, Hayes threw two more touchdown passes, a 41-yard strike to Shariffa Piamonte and a 63-yard touchdown to Mary Jones. The Builders went into halftime with a commanding 41-0 lead.
The third quarter saw more of the same as Southwestern added 20 points. Hayes threw her fourth touchdown pass of the night, a 49-yard connection to Piamonte, and Kaila Yniguez added a 4-yard rushing touchdown. The defense continued its dominance, forcing three more turnovers, two of which led to touchdowns.
Southwestern finished the game with 371 total yards, including 313 through the air. Hayes completed 16 of 21 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns. Manfre led the receivers with six catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns.
Bethel struggled offensively, as quarterbacks Kyndall Longman and Nevaeh Gonzales combined for just 100 yards and four interceptions. The Threshers were held to negative rushing yards (-25).
The Builders' defense added to the blowout with a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown by Teagan Smith in the fourth quarter.
Southwestern remains on the road as they finish off the season traveling to Fremont, Nebraska to play in another conference matchup against Midland University, Saturday April 5th at 1:00PM.
