WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College struck late and held off a comeback bid to defeat Central Christian College 3-2 on Wednesday night in nonconference men's soccer action.

The Moundbuilders opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Marcus Rostad finished a cross from Jack Bagley-Etheridge for his first goal of the season. Central Christian pulled level shortly after halftime as Boston Peterson scored in the 46th minute to make it 1-1.

Southwestern regained control midway through the second half when Connor Inlow delivered a go-ahead strike in the 67th minute. Central Christian answered again in the 86th, with Sidney Tippner converting off a feed from James Rigby to tie the match at 2-2. Less than two minutes later, Southwestern capitalized on a penalty kick, and Marcos Benavidez buried his attempt for what proved to be the game-winner.

Rostad paced the Moundbuilders with three shots, all on goal, while Benavidez made the most of his lone attempt. Inlow added one shot and one goal, and Bagley-Etheridge provided an assist while testing the keeper with two shots of his own. Goalkeeper KJ Masso recorded five saves to help secure the win.

Southwestern finished with 13 shots, nine on frame, while Central Christian tallied 11 shots with eight on goal. The victory gave the Moundbuilders a strong start to their campaign, showing balance in attack and composure in late-game pressure.

The Builders are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 3, against Hastings College at 7:30pm inside Richard L. Jantz stadium.
