WINFIELD, Kan.— Southwestern College (1-3, 1-0) broke through for its first win of the season and first Conference victory Saturday evening, defeating York University (Neb.) (0-5-1, 0-1) 1-0 at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Moundbuilders found the breakthrough in the 70th minute. Millie Hazzard, junior No. 6, converted off a set piece following a York foul to put Southwestern ahead. The goal marked Hazzard's second of the season.
Goalkeeper Hayden Clark anchored the Builders' defense, recording 10 saves to secure the shutout. Southwestern held firm in the closing minutes as York pressed for an equalizer, but the clock struck 90:00 with the score unchanged, sealing the victory.
The win moves Southwestern to 1-0 in KCAC play. The Moundbuilders will resume their conference opener on Monday, Sept. 22, when they travel to Wichita to finish the remaining 29:53 against Friends University after the contest was previously suspended.
