WINFIELD, Kan.— Southwestern College and the University of Saint Mary fought to a hard-earned 1–1 draw in Conference matchup Wednesday evening at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
Southwestern (1-3-2,1-0-2) grabbed the early advantage midway through the first half. In the 18th minute, junior forward Abigail Webb fired a shot on target that was stopped by Saint Mary goalkeeper Avah Casarez. Just seconds later, senior striker Kaitlyn Walker pounced on the rebound and buried the game's opening goal at the 17:46 mark, her first of the season, giving the Moundbuilders a 1–0 lead.
The Builders controlled much of the opening half, outshooting the Spires 7–3, while senior goalkeeper Hayden Clark made three saves to protect the advantage going into halftime.
Saint Mary (3-2-3,1-0-2) came out aggressive in the second half, unleashing 12 shots to Southwestern's two. Clark stood tall with four second-half saves, but the Spires finally broke through in the 88th minute. Forward Rebecca Lord netted the equalizer on an assist from Kate Erpelding at 87:27, silencing the home crowd and leveling the match.Southwestern pushed for a late winner, with defender Natalie Belanger forcing a save in the 86th minute, but the Builders couldn't capitalize in the closing moments.
Clark finished with seven saves on the night, while Walker paced the attack with two shots and the lone goal. Saint Mary tallied 15 total shots, including eight on goal, compared to nine shots and four on frame for Southwestern.
Southwestern remains home Saturday, Sept. 27, when they host the Sterling College Warriors at Richard L. Jantz Stadium. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
