WINFIELD, Kan.— Southwestern College scored three times in the opening 25 minutes and defeated Sterling College 5–0 in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer match Saturday morning at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
Abigail Webb opened the scoring in the fourth minute, heading in a corner kick from Millie Hazzard at 3:13. Sarah Hobrecht doubled the lead in the 17th minute, finishing a one-on-one chance after receiving a through ball from freshman defender Kaila Correa.
Kara Medina made it 3–0 in the 25th minute with a strike from outside the box off a pass from Kaitlyn Walker. Sterling's starting goalkeeper, Bella Duckworth, received a red card in the 32nd minute, forcing the Warriors to play with 10 players for the remainder of the match.
Walker extended the lead to 4–0 in the 65th minute, finishing a run and cross from defender Maggie Bielefeld. Freshman Shaylona Rollings closed the scoring in the 86th minute, cleaning up a rebound after Hazzard's shot was deflected, giving Hazzard her second assist of the match.
Southwestern outshot Sterling 17–6, including a 10–3 advantage in shots on goal. The Moundbuilder defense, led by captain Natalie Belanger, limited Sterling's attack throughout the match. Goalkeeper Hayden Clark made three saves to secure the shutout.
The Moundbuilders improved to 2–0–2 in KCAC play and 2–3–2 overall. Sterling dropped to 0–4–0 in the conference and 2–5–1 on the season.
Southwestern will travel to Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on Oct. 1 with a 5:00 pm kickoff to face Oklahoma Wesleyan University in its next conference match.
