WINFIELD, Kans. — Southwestern College put together a determined performance Wednesday afternoon, but the Moundbuilders came up short in a 3-2 loss to Hastings College at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
Hastings grabbed the opening goal in the 6th minute through Johnny Pedroza before Southwestern took control midway through the first half. Captain Jack Bagley-Etheridge delivered the equalizer in the 21st minute, and just four minutes later, Connor Inlow struck again off an assist from Carlos Villalba. Inlow recorded his third goal of the season — one in every match so far — to give the Builders a 2-1 advantage at the break.
The Broncos responded after halftime, pulling even in the 52nd minute on another goal from Pedroza and edging ahead with the deciding strike in the 64th minute from Tim Berger. Southwestern battled to find another answer, but Hastings' defense held firm down the stretch.
The Moundbuilders were efficient in attack, registering five shots on goal and matching Hastings with five corner kicks. Goalkeeper KJ Masso kept Southwestern close, turning away eight of the Broncos' 11 shots on target.
With the result, Southwestern moved to 1-2 overall. The Builders will aim to bounce back at home against Randall University on Tuesday, Sept. 9, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
