HILLSBORO, Kan. — Southwestern quarterback Jamie Odom threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns as the No. 14-ranked Moundbuilders held off Tabor College 28-21 on Saturday in a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup.
The game opened with unusual chaos, as both teams were flagged for pre-snap penalties before the first play, and a referee left injured in the opening series, leaving the crew short-handed the rest of the way.
After trading touchdowns in the first quarter, Tabor grabbed a 14-7 halftime lead. But Southwestern surged back in the third, scoring twice to take control. Odom connected with Joe Smyth for a 53-yard strike, then found Aidan Koenig from 30 yards out to swing the momentum.
Smyth finished with 113 yards and two touchdowns on four receptions, including Southwestern's opening score in the first quarter. Koenig added six catches for 68 yards, and Matthew Holthusen caught five passes for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Christian Steward contributed in multiple ways, completing a pass, rushing for 35 yards, and hauling in four receptions. He also added 80 yards on kickoff returns, keeping the Builders in strong field position throughout the night.
Southwestern's defense stiffened in the second half, led by Corbin Williams and Corey McCoy with a combined 15 tackles. Bryon Johnson Jr., Adrian Holman, and Justin Smith each came up with interceptions to help seal the victory.
The Builders finished with 441 total yards, including 321 through the air, while holding Tabor to 303 yards of offense. Southwestern also dominated time of possession, holding the ball for more than 34 minutes.
Tabor managed a late fourth-quarter touchdown to cut the deficit, but Odom and the offense ran out the clock to secure the win.
