Winfield, Kan. — #14 Southwestern College looks to stay unbeaten when the Moundbuilders host RV Evangel (Mo.) on Saturday, Sept. 13th at 11 a.m. at Richard L. Jantz Stadium in Winfield.
Southwestern (2-0) enters the non-conference clash with momentum, averaging 530.5 yards of total offense and outscoring opponents 89-28 in its first two games. Quarterback Jamie Odom has accounted for 559 total yards, including 474 through the air and four passing touchdowns. Receiver Matthew Holthusen has emerged as a top target with 196 yards and two scores. On the ground, Christian Steward leads the rushing attack with 135 yards and a touchdown, while the Moundbuilders' balanced offense is averaging 254 rushing yards per game.
Evangel (2-0) counters with a high-powered attack of its own, putting up 655 yards per game and scoring 113 points across its first two contests. Running back Eric Williams II is averaging 148 rushing yards per game with four touchdowns, while quarterback Reid Potts has been nearly flawless, completing 79.5 percent of his passes for 594 yards and five touchdowns without an interception.
The matchup also carries added weight from recent history. Last season, Southwestern traveled to Springfield and handed the Valor a 21-3 loss, snapping Evangel's four-game series win streak and giving the Moundbuilders their first victory in the rivalry since 2014. The all-time series favors Evangel 4-1, but Saturday marks an early opportunity for Southwestern to establish control on its home turf.
Defensively, Southwestern has allowed just 261.5 yards per game, holding opponents to 2.9 yards per carry. Linebacker Carl Malvo has anchored the front with 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Evangel's defense has been equally stout, forcing five interceptions through two games and limiting opponents to 14 points per game.
With both offenses firing and defenses already showing strength, Saturday's matchup is expected to be an early-season test between two unbeaten teams with postseason ambitions. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Jantz Stadium.
