WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College went shot-for-shot with rival Friends University for one quarter, but a cold stretch in the second period proved costly as the Falcons pulled away for an 87-66 win over the Lady Builders on Wednesday night in a Conference women's basketball game at Stewart Field House.
The teams were tied 21-21 after the first quarter before Friends outscored Southwestern 25-11 in the second to take a 46-32 lead at halftime. Southwestern matched Friends 21-21 in the third quarter, but the Falcons maintained separation with a 20-13 edge in the fourth.
Southwestern (4-12, 0-11) had four players score in double figures. Kennedy Ford led the Lady Builders with 22 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Breanna Goad added 18 points and connected on six 3s, and Martha De La Rosa scored 11. Senior Macey Pond posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Friends (15-1, 10-1) was led by Katie Weiss with 23 points, including seven 3-pointers. Lauryn McIver added 17 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Raegan Bugaj scored 13 off the bench, while KK Peeler and Anna Sant'Anna finished with 10 points apiece.
Friends shot 50.0% from the field (34 of 68) and went 13 of 33 from 3-point range. Southwestern hit 16 3-pointers but shot 38.2% overall (21 of 55).
Southwestern will remain at home Saturday, Jan. 17, when it hosts Sterling College at 1 p.m. at Stewart Field House.
