Southwestern Overpowers Sterling In Dominant Home Win

WINFIELD, Kan. — Wyatt Bell scored 18 points and Southwestern College shot better than 60 percent from the floor as the Moundbuilders pulled away in the second half for an 86–59 victory over Sterling on Saturday afternoon.

Southwestern (13-5, 7-5) led 42–32 at halftime before opening the second half with a decisive run, overwhelming the Warriors' defense. The Moundbuilders outscored Sterling 44–27 after the break and built the lead to as many as 27. The win moves Southwestern to 8-2 in Stewart Fieldhouse. 

Bell finished 8 of 9 from the field, while Evan Barber and Nigel John each added 17 points. Eli Sawyers chipped in 13 points off the bench as Southwestern placed four players in double figures.

The Moundbuilders were efficient offensively, shooting 34 of 55 (61.8 percent) from the field and scoring 50 points in the paint. Southwestern also dished out 19 assists and committed just nine turnovers.

Julian Smith led Sterling (7-11, 4-8) with 24 points, hitting six 3-pointers, while Camren Johnson added 17. The Warriors shot 39.7 percent overall and were limited to 35.7 percent at the free-throw line.

Southwestern will return to action Wednesday, Jan. 21, when it travels to Hillsboro, Kansas, to face the Tabor College Bluejays.
