Hot Shooting Gives Moundbuilders Fifth Straight Win

WINFIELD, Kan. — Evan Barber poured in a game-high 26 points and Southwestern College shot better than 60 percent from the field as the Moundbuilders pulled away for an 87-74 win over Evangel on Wednesday night at Stewart Fieldhouse.

Southwestern (11-4, 5-4 KCAC) wasted no time taking control, opening the game with three straight 3-pointers and a 9-0 spurt to set the tone. The victory marked Southwestern's fifth straight win, its longest winning streak of the season.

The Moundbuilders continued to roll offensively, knocking down 10 3-pointers in the first half to build a 47-39 lead at the break. Barber led the charge by hitting 9 of 12 shots from the field, including 8-for-11 from beyond the arc as he recorded 26 points to go along with 4 rebounds and two assists. Southwestern finished the night 14 of 25 (56 percent) from 3-point range.

Wyatt Bell added 19 points and dished out six assists, while Nigel John scored 11 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting night. Zach Hidalgo, the KCAC's reigning Defensive Player of the Week, led the Moundbuilders with eight rebounds to go along with 10 points, six assists and a block as Southwestern recorded 22 assists on 31 made field goals.

The Moundbuilders never trailed and stretched the margin to as many as 14 points midway through the second half. Southwestern continued its efficient shooting after halftime, connecting on 58 percent of its shots over the final 20 minutes to keep Evangel at arm's length.

Jacob Lafferty led Evangel (10-5, 6-3 KCAC) with 27 points, while Garrett Davault added 17. The Valor shot 47.3 percent from the field but struggled from long range, finishing 4 of 15 from 3-point distance.

Southwestern held a 21-14 edge on the glass and outscored Evangel 19-15 in bench points to seal the conference victory.

Southwestern returns to action on Saturday, January 10, when the Moundbuilders travel to McPherson College. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. The Moundbuilders dropped the earlier meeting this season to the Bulldogs in Winfield, falling 83-74.
