SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Nigel John scored 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting to lead Southwestern College to an 86-71 victory over Evangel on Thursday night at AGFinancial Arena.
The win was the fifth straight for the Moundbuilders, who have now won 13 of their last 15 games. The result also carried significant postseason implications in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. Southwestern and Evangel entered the night tied in the KCAC standings, and with the victory, the Moundbuilders move into a tie with Bethel College for fourth place.
Southwestern shot 62.1% from the field (36 of 58) and 45.5% from 3-point range (10 of 22) in one of its most efficient offensive performances of the season. The Moundbuilders led 42-36 at halftime and pulled away in the second half, building a lead as large as 23 points.
Evan Barber added 14 points for Southwestern, while Isaac Hoberecht had 14 points and nine assists. Wyatt Bell finished with 12 points and seven rebounds, and Eli Sawyers contributed 12 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting.
The Moundbuilders outscored Evangel 46-22 in the paint and received 22 points from their bench.
Evangel shot 42.9% from the field (24 of 56) and was led by Jacob Lafferty's 11 points.
Southwestern returns home to the friendly confines of Stewart Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 14, for a 3 p.m. tipoff looking to extend its winning streak.
