Lady Builders head to Wichita for KCAC rematch with No. 20 Friends

WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College women's basketball heads up the road to Wichita on Wednesday for a Conference rematch with rival Friends University at 6 p.m. inside the Garvey Center.

It's the second meeting this season between the Lady Builders (4-22, 0-20 ) and the No. 20 Falcons (21-5, 15-5), who pulled away late in Winfield on Jan. 14 for an 87-66 win.

Southwestern kept pace early in that first matchup, knotted 21-21 after one quarter, before Friends used a 25-11 second period to seize control. Despite the loss, the Lady Builders added another mark to the women's basketball record book, hitting 16 3-pointers, the most in a single game in program history. Kennedy Ford led the way with 22 points and five triples, while Breanna Goad added 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from deep. Southwestern finished 16 of 34 from beyond the arc (47.1 percent).

Friends countered with balance and efficiency, shooting 50 percent from the field and getting 23 points from Katie Weiss, who hit seven 3s. Lauryn McIver chipped in 17 points and eight rebounds, and the Falcons outscored Southwestern 45-24 over the second and fourth quarters to pull away.

Wednesday's trip comes with momentum needed on the Southwestern side after a 55-42 loss to Kansas Wesleyan on Feb. 14. The Lady Builders have leaned on guard Macey Pond, who enters the week as the team's leading scorer at 16.0 points per game while also averaging 9.4 rebounds and pacing the roster in assists (90). Ford (10.8 ppg), Goad (9.9 ppg) and Martha De La Rosa (9.2 ppg) provide additional scoring punch, and Southwestern averages 7.7 made 3s per game.

Friends has controlled the recent series and sits among the KCAC leaders, winning nine of the last 10 meetings. In the all-time matchup dating back to 2005, Friends holds a 26-18 edge, though Southwestern owns an 11-10 home mark in the series. The challenge in Wichita has been steeper, where the Lady Builders are 6-16 against the Falcons.

Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Friends' Garvey Center in Wichita.
