WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern salvaged a split in its home-opening doubleheader with Central Christian, falling 2-1 in the opener before rallying for a 4-3 extra-inning victory in Game 2 on Tuesday evening.
The Moundbuilders move to 4-2 on the season.
Central Christian claimed the first game behind a complete-game effort from Clarissa Rejino. The Tigers scored once in the third and added what proved to be the decisive run in the fourth.
Southwestern tied the game in the third when Ellie Kucera doubled and later scored on Faith Campbell's RBI single. Campbell also went the distance in the circle, striking out 11 and allowing two runs on seven hits over seven innings. Kucera finished with a double and 11 putouts behind the plate.
Central Christian totaled seven hits in the opener, highlighted by triples from Ciara Valadez and Ashley Vaccaro. Baylee Blackburn and Valadez each drove in a run.
In Game 2, Southwestern responded in dramatic fashion.
Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the eighth, the Moundbuilders strung together timely extra-base hits to walk off with the win. Lainey Hardman doubled and Jolie Boyd followed with a two-bagger of her own during the late push, while Mackenzie Reinert drove in two runs on a double earlier in the contest.
Southwestern finished with 10 hits, matching Central Christian's total. Taylor Mesna collected two hits and scored a run, while Boyd added two hits and an RBI. Abigail Allen delivered a key RBI off the bench.
Central Christian built a 3-2 lead with single runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings. Paige Major paced the Tigers with three hits, and Chelsie Hirtler drove in a run.
Emma Willesden started in the circle for Southwestern, allowing one run over four innings. Jaidyn Soldin added two scoreless frames in relief before Faith Campbell earned the win, tossing the final three innings and allowing two unearned runs.
Chelsie Hirtler went 8 2/3 innings for Central Christian, surrendering four runs (three earned) on 10 hits.
Southwestern returns to action Thursday, Feb. 19 with a 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. doubleheader at Southwestern Christian University in Bethany, Oklahoma.
