WINFIELD, Kan. — The Peru State Bobcats swept a doubleheader from the Southwestern College Moundbuilders on Saturday at the Broadway Sports Complex, posting a 9-1 victory in the opener before edging Southwestern 7-5 in the nightcap.
In the first game, Peru State jumped out quickly. Wrigley Strong belted a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Bobcats an early lead and finished with three RBIs. Airam Betancourt added a run-scoring triple and Jonathan Gutierrez connected for a solo home run, contributing to Peru State's scoring across multiple innings.
Senior right-hander Casey Ogden earned the win, scattering four hits and allowing one unearned run over seven innings while striking out six to limit Southwestern's offense. Southwestern's lone run came in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Brice Nittler. The Moundbuilders managed just four hits in the game.
Game two was closer throughout, but Peru State again struck first and answered every Southwestern push. Strong provided the decisive blow with a three-run home run in the third inning and later added a two-run double in the sixth to finish with five RBIs. Peru State carried a 7-3 lead into the seventh before Southwestern rallied.
Sam Benz and Raisean Dorsey each drove in runs in the final inning for Southwestern, but the Moundbuilders left the tying run at the plate as Peru State held on for the 7-5 victory. Ogden went the distance for the Bobcats in the nightcap, giving up five runs, four earned, on five hits while striking out seven. Nathan Perez scored twice for Southwestern in the loss.
Southwestern will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as the Moundbuilders take on the Peru State Bobcats again for a set of 7-inning games. First pitches are set for noon and 3 p.m., respectively.
