WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College heads to Baldwin City on Saturday with a chance to tighten the race near the top of the standings, but the Builders will have to solve one of the league's most productive offenses when they visit Baker University.
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. March 14 at Liston Stadium in Baldwin City for a conference matchup between Southwestern (3-1 overall, 3-1 KCAC) and Baker (5-1 overall, 1-1 KCAC).
Southwestern has shown a defense-first identity through its first four games. The Builders are allowing just 103.8 yards per game and have held three opponents scoreless in wins over William Woods, Cottey and, after a 12-6 decision, Hesston College. Opponents have managed minus-81 rushing yards against Southwestern, a sign of a unit that has controlled the line of scrimmage and forced teams to become one-dimensional.
That defensive approach has helped Southwestern stay in games while its offense continues to develop. The Builders are averaging 178.0 total yards per game, with most of the production coming through the air. Quarterback Kennedi Hayes has thrown for 355 yards and three touchdowns in two appearances, and Southwestern has 617 passing yards and six touchdown passes as a team.
Vivianna Solis has been the top big-play target with 14 catches for 120 yards and a touchdown, while Devina Lytle has added seven receptions for 63 yards and Andrea Moon has contributed 49 receiving yards and 22 rushing yards. Southwestern has not scored a rushing touchdown yet, so its best offensive stretches have come when Hayes is efficient and the short passing game keeps the chains moving.
The Builders also have relied on field position and defensive disruption. Kennedy Wesley leads the team with 13 tackles and two sacks, Moon has 12 tackles and a sack, and Solis has been active in coverage with three pass breakups. Southwestern has three interceptions this season, including one by Lytle, and its defense has produced 20 tackles for loss.
Baker enters with a far different profile.
The Wildcats are averaging 38.0 points per game and have scored 228 points in six games behind a balanced, explosive attack led by quarterback Tara Llorente. She has completed 91 of 142 passes for 1,042 yards and 15 touchdowns while also leading Baker in rushing with 249 yards and 10 scores. Her dual-threat ability gives Baker a spread-style offense that can stress defenses with quick throws, vertical shots and quarterback runs.
Kaley Phillips leads Baker's receivers with 27 catches for 374 yards, while Sanija Waller has 20 receptions for 142 yards and also provides another rushing and passing option. Baker has 1,279 passing yards and 16 touchdown passes, but the Wildcats have also rushed for 434 yards and 18 scores, making them dangerous in both open space and the red zone.
Defensively, Baker has been opportunistic. The Wildcats have 13 interceptions in six games and are allowing only 6.5 points per game. Faith Phillips has four interceptions, Gabriella Zabaletta has two, and Masielle Peralta has two more, giving Baker a secondary that has consistently flipped possessions and created short fields.
The contrast in styles will be one of the main storylines Saturday. Southwestern has won by limiting possessions, defending well in space and asking its defense to set the tone. Baker prefers tempo, chunk plays and pressure on opponents to match its scoring pace. If the Builders can keep the game low-scoring and avoid turnovers, they should have a chance to make it a four-quarter contest. If the Wildcats find rhythm early through Llorente and their passing game, the matchup could tilt quickly.
There is also recent history between the programs in Baldwin City. Baker beat Southwestern 51-14 on April 10, 2025, at Liston Stadium, piling up 431 total yards and six touchdown passes. Southwestern's highlight that night came on a 62-yard interception return by Mary Jones, but Baker controlled the game with its passing attack and finished with a wide edge in possession time.
Southwestern enters Saturday coming off a 19-0 win over Cottey on March 10 after absorbing its first loss of the season, 43-0 at Ottawa, on March 7. Baker's 5-1 overall mark suggests one of the stronger starts in the conference, though its 1-1 league record leaves room for movement in the standings.
For Southwestern, the formula is straightforward: defend, protect the ball and make enough plays in the passing game to stay within striking distance. For Baker, the goal will be to turn the game into the kind of up-tempo, space-driven matchup that has fueled its fast start.
