WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College men's soccer opened the 2026 season with a 2-1 loss to Northwestern College Thursday night in a non-conference match at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
The Moundbuilders struck first late in the opening half. Defender Nicola Antiglio put Southwestern on the board in the 44th minute after Cooper Bates sent a long throw into the box. Antiglio got his head on the ball and sent it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Bates was credited with the assist as Southwestern took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Southwestern's defense kept the Raiders off the scoreboard throughout the first half and deep into the second. Franco Guazzotti, Adrian Gimenez, Antiglio, Dennis Martinez, Aidan Wiggs and Bates each played the full 90 minutes for the Moundbuilders. Guazzotti recorded six saves, including four in the second half.
Northwestern tied the match in the 83rd minute when Gorka Ilundain scored off an assist from Bram Zwinkels. The Raiders took the lead four minutes later when Rasmus Morrison scored in the 87th minute to make it 2-1.
The Moundbuilders continued to battle through the final minutes, but Northwestern held on for the win. Southwestern finished with four corner kicks and held the lead for more than 38 minutes after Antiglio's first-half goal.
Southwestern moves to 0-1 on the season.
The Moundbuilders return to action Saturday, Sept. 5, at 3 p.m. against Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. The match will be played at Lloyd Wilson Field.
