LINDSBORG, Kan. — The Southwestern College football team put together an explosive offensive performance Saturday afternoon, defeating Bethany College 82-16 at Kessinger Family Stadium.

The Moundbuilders improved to 4-1 on the season after totaling 796 yards of offense, including 496 yards on the ground and 300 through the air. Southwestern scored 12 touchdowns while averaging 9.6 yards per play.

After an interception ended Southwestern's opening possession, the Moundbuilders quickly took control. James Odom connected with Christian Steward for a 69-yard touchdown with 8:31 remaining in the first quarter to open the scoring.

Noah Roberts followed with a 3-yard touchdown run before Bryce Chambers broke free for a 64-yard rushing touchdown. Chambers struck again late in the quarter, catching a 44-yard touchdown pass from Odom to give Southwestern a 28-0 advantage after the opening period.

Southwestern continued to pull away in the second quarter. Zamir Hall scored from 1 yard out before Steward delivered one of the biggest plays of the afternoon, racing 94 yards for a touchdown. Steward added a 6-yard touchdown reception less than a minute later, and Odom closed the half with a 4-yard touchdown run to send the Moundbuilders into halftime with a 55-0 lead.

Steward produced a dominant performance, rushing for 251 yards and a touchdown on just 16 carries while adding two receptions for 75 yards and two more scores. He finished with 326 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns.

Chambers also provided several explosive plays, finishing with five receptions for 90 yards and a touchdown while rushing twice for 70 yards and another score. He totaled 160 yards from scrimmage.

Odom completed 10 of 21 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns. He also scored twice on the ground as Southwestern's offense finished the afternoon with nine rushing touchdowns and three passing scores.

The Moundbuilders added two more touchdowns in the third quarter. Odom scored on a 1-yard run before Roland Harvey broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 69-0.

Bethany broke through early in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard Trent Akins touchdown run. Southwestern answered with an 11-yard touchdown run by Chrishon Gregory. The Swedes added an 18-yard touchdown pass from Damian Briano to Jonathan Cano before Willie Murphy Jr. capped the scoring for Southwestern with a 28-yard touchdown run.

The Southwestern defense held Bethany to 211 total yards, including 86 rushing yards and 125 passing yards. The Moundbuilders forced four turnovers, intercepting three passes and recovering one fumble.

Jason Wickliff, Joshua Mars and JR Goddard each recorded an interception for Southwestern, while Blaine Fulmer recovered a fumble. Corbyn Clement and Matthew Johnson each recorded a sack, and Savion Owens led the defense with eight tackles.

Southwestern will return home Saturday, Oct. 3, when the Moundbuilders host Avila University at Richard L. Jantz Stadium in Winfield, Kan. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
