WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College used a dominant defensive performance and a 21-point second quarter to pull away from Tabor College for a 38-3 victory Friday night at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.

The Builders improved to 2-0 after holding Tabor to just 77 yards of total offense and three first downs. Southwestern finished with 434 total yards, including 287 through the air and 147 on the ground.

Southwestern opened the scoring with a 26-yard field goal from Jeremiah Schaefer in the first quarter. Tabor tied the game at 3 early in the second before the Builders took control.

Christian Steward capped an 82-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to give Southwestern a 10-3 lead. James Odom added a 5-yard rushing touchdown before connecting with Noah Roberts for a 55-yard score late in the second quarter, sending the Builders into halftime with a 24-3 advantage.

Odom completed 16 of 28 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns while also adding a rushing score. Bryce Chambers led Southwestern with eight receptions for 88 yards and a touchdown, while Roberts finished with two catches for 66 yards and a score. Steward led the ground game with 59 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

Southwestern's defense kept Tabor off the scoreboard throughout the second half. The Builders recorded five sacks, recovered two fumbles and intercepted two passes. Britt Wittschen led Southwestern with seven tackles and a sack while also recovering a fumble.

The Builders added two fourth-quarter touchdowns to put the game away. Odom connected with Chambers for a 3-yard score before Roland Harvey added a 1-yard touchdown run to seal the win.

Southwestern returns to action Sept. 12 when the Builders travel to Evangel University.
