Coach Luz Divina Nuñez Sierra, originally from Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, has been coaching volleyball since 2017. Her journey in the sport began with a life-changing moment in 2006, when she first watched the Olympics and fell in love with volleyball. Inspired by the impact the game had on her life, and guided by her faith, she felt called to coach as a way to inspire others, both through the sport itself and by sharing the gospel.
Coach Nuñez Sierra came to the United States in 2017 on an F-1 visa to study and pursue collegiate volleyball. Her educational journey has taken her across the country, beginning at Seward County Community College, where she earned an Associate of Science degree. She continued her education at Hofstra University in New York to study Fine Arts, then attended Grambling State University in Louisiana to study Sports Administration, and she is now pursuing a degree in Business her at Southwestern College.
Throughout her career, Coach Nuñez Sierra has contributed to the programs at each school she attended by working summer camps, providing private lessons, and assisting the head coaches. One of the most defining moments of her coaching career came during a tournament in New York when she unexpectedly had to step into the head coach’s role. Nervous and overwhelmed, she was reassured by her players and reminded by her faith to simply be herself. That tournament not only earned her, her first coaching medal but also solidified her calling to lead and mentor through volleyball.
For Coach Nuñez Sierra, the highlights of coaching extend beyond wins and medals. Her greatest joy is witnessing athletes grow both as players and as people, strengthening their skills on the court while also deepening their faith off it. She views every athlete as an opportunity to fulfill God’s purpose, living out the words of Matthew 28:19–20 by using sports as a platform to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
