GULF SHORES, Ala. – The Southwestern College men's and women's outdoor track & field squads have spent the past two days competing at the NAIA Outdoor T&F Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala. After the first day of the event, SC had not been able to produce a finalist or All-American, but that all changed on day two. A seventh-place finish and two qualifications in the preliminaries of track events have made day three of the meet count all the more.
Day one of the event consisted of the lone women's field performance by Sidney Dennis in the Hammer Throw for Southwestern. She ended up placing 28th in the competition, launching the hammer 140'11".
Chronologically, the next event to occur was the women's 4x100m Relay. The Builder grouping, consisting of KeMya Keeton, Lauryn Terry, Kyah Hill, and Rachel Booker, placed 26th in the event. With their time of 48.60, they ended up missing the finals.
Then, the men's 4x100m Relay took to the track. The squad of Keyshawn Jones, Chris Moffett, Phillip Jones, and David Mvundura finished in 15th among a total of 42 qualifying schools. Unfortunately, the showing was not enough to place them into the finals. They clocked in at 41.46 in their heat.
As the day continued, the final Builder event was the women's 200m Dash, where Rachel Booker finished in the 26th position in the prelims, clocking in at a time of 25.79. That performance ended the opening day for Southwestern, as more events would follow on day two.
The second day of competition started with the men's 800m Run, where Slavoski Wright finished 19th with a clip of 1:54.99.
Then, the defending runner-up in the High Jump at the last two NAIA T&F Championships, finished with a jump of 6'6.75" to tie for seventh place and earn a spot on the podium as an NAIA All-American in the event for the third straight track & field season. His performance also earned 0.6 points for the Moundbuilder men as the meet continued on.
In the men's 400m Dash, Southwestern's Chris Moffett was able to complete his Personal Best time of 47.38 in the prelims. Though he did not win his heat, he ended up posting the fourth-best clip in the entire field of runners, making him a finalist in the event. With the result, he became the first SC track athlete to be a finalist at the meet this year.
Then, the men's 4x400m Relay team finished the day with an incredible run. David Mvundura, Wright, Corey Durham, and Moffett clocked in at their Season-Best time of 3:12.47, which put them in the No. 4 position at the meet through the preliminaries. In the end, the Builder squad was able to qualify for the finals on day three.
On Wednesday, both Chris Moffett in the 400m Dash and the men's 4x400m Relay squad will be in action, as they look to build upon their All-American status with a national title in their respective events. All Builder fans' eyes will be on the track on day three of the 2022 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
