WINFIELD, KAN. – On Saturday, October 14, the Southwestern College Volleyball squad hosted play against the visiting Warriors of Sterling College as they celebrated their Seniors on Senior Day. A hard-fought battle played at Stewart Field House in Winfield, Kan., ended in a loss for the Moundbuilders, 3-2.
The opening set saw Sterling College take an early lead. They clinched the first set, 21-25, with strong attacks and solid defense.
In the second set, Southwestern came roaring back, 25-20. And found a way to battle through the third set and win a nail-biting affair, 25-23.
The Builders, looking to close it out in the fourth set but with their backs against the wall as Avila came out swinging in the fourth set to win, 20-25.
Down to the last set, the Builders did not show enough strength to pull through and lost 4-15.
Baylee York had a strong offensive performance and led the team with 10 kills. Daci Stover and KaSandra Lyons followed with 8 kills each and Emma Lincoln finished the game with 7 kills.
Haley Shaw and Reece Likes both led the team in assist with 18 each.
Baylee York and Emma Lincoln both secured the net with three blocks each.
Sophie Wicker led the team with 40 digs, and Morgan Pulido and Avery Riedel followed her with 22 digs each.
The Builders (9-10, 2-5 KCAC) are now preparing to face Evangel University on Wednesday, October 18, at 7 p.m. at Springfield, Mo., as they hope to return to the winning side.
