Builders Unable to Overcome Threshers

WINFIELD, Kans – Saturday, September 30, 2023, the Moundbuilders (7-8) fell at home against Bethel College (15-7), in three sets, 16-25, 15-25, 23-25.

After starting out in a hole in the first set, SC clawed their way back to get within 14-20. But the Threshers were free swinging at the net with Cam Offerie leading with 5 kills in the first set and six points by herself.

Darla Crow and Harlie Hunton added in 3 kills each, that created the biggest obstacle for the Builders.

The Builders would finish with 18 total digs in the first set, but Bethel picked up 27 digs and had 14 assists to SC's four.

The Builders only had five kills in the first set, Callie Snowbarger had three and Daci Stover dropped two.

After dropping the first set, Morgan Pulido kickstarted the Builders with an ace to begin the second set. That would prove to be the only lead for the Builders in the second set.

But Bethel would continue their attack at the net behind Hunton, Offerie, and Crow to jump out to a 1-4 lead.

The Threshers extended the lead, 2-6 by continuing to convert at the net, and the Thresher lead kept extending until a Builder timeout at 8-14.

Down 10-18, Baylee York had a much needed block on Offerle at the net for a chance to build some momentum. Unable to capitalize, the Threshers would continue to extend their lead, 12-21.

SC would fall in the second set, 15-25.

The Builders would come alive in the third set with their backs against the wall.

Up 15-13 after a Thresher timeout, SC was building momentum.

Able to build a 18-14 lead, Bethel began their comeback. They got back to within 19-18 and the serve and they tied it at 19-19. A Crow kill would enable Bethel to regain the lead, 20-19.
But SC would tie it on the very next possession on a Daci Stover kill.

Trading points, SC tied it up at 21-21.

After a York kill, the Builders were back on top. 22-21.

But an SC block at the net would end up out of bounds, and the match was tied again, 22-22.

Hunton would then get yet sixth kill of the match to regain the lead yet again, 22-23 and force a Moundbuilder timeout.

That would prove to be the biggest push of the match for the Builders, 12 ties and nine lead changes later, Bethel finished it, 23-25.

The Builders are on the court again Wednesday, October 4 at Avila, 6 pm.
