Second Half Comeback Falls Short at Ottawa

OTTAWA, Kan. – Saturday, January 13, 2024, Southwestern College (0-14, 0-10) faced a challenging Ottawa (10-6, 5-5) team on the road and nearly pulled off the second half comeback, but fell short, 70-78.

Down 28-48 at halftime, the Builders managed to cut the lead down to seven with four minutes to play.

With the SC defense holding off the Ottawa attack, that set the stage for Macey "Big Dog" Pond, who nailed a three pointer with 1:44 left in the game. The big three brought the Builders within four points, 70-74.

SC was able to get a defensive stand with an Ottawa turnover on the very next possession. But with 1:19 remaining, Southwestern was called for an offensive foul, and lost the momentum simultaneously.

Quarter by Quarter Breakdown:
In the first quarter, Ottawa took an early 11-21 lead, shooting 52.38%.
 
The second quarter Southwestern struggled to score shooting 20% for the quarter, while Ottawa continued to extend the lead, 28-48 by halftime.
 
Coming out of halftime, Southwestern improved their defense and their scoring, shooting 47.06%, but Ottawa maintained control, closing the quarter with a 57-49 lead.
 
The Builders put together a great quarter of both offense and defense to give themselves a chance on the road. Ottawa escaped with the 78-70 victory.
 
Christy Wiebe Led the scoring for Southwestern with 23 points, 10 rebounds.
 
Pond finished with 14 points, eight rebounds.
 
Callie Scott contributed 12 points, six rebounds.
 
The Builders are back at home, Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 5pm against the University of Saint Mary.
