STERLING, KAN. – On March 23
rd, the Southwestern College Baseball squad went on the road to battle the University of Saint Mary at Leavenworth, Kan.
GAME 1 – Friday 3:00 PM
In a compelling baseball clash, Southwestern College emerged victorious with a commanding 9-4 win over the University of Saint Mary. The game was marked by Southwestern's potent offense and University of Saint Mary's defensive struggles.
The Builders wasted no time asserting their dominance as Z. Boone crossed the plate in the first inning after a pickoff attempt resulted in an out at first base.
The Saints managed to tie the game in the second inning, but Southwestern quickly regained the lead, capitalizing on an error to push ahead.
Saint Mary's B. Roop delivered a crucial hit in the third inning, driving in two runs to extend their lead to 4-1.
However, the Builders refused to relent, mounting a comeback in the fourth inning. A. Brown and S. Espinoza contributed key hits to bring the score to 5-4 in Southwestern's favor.
The Builders continued to capitalize on Saint Mary's defensive errors, adding more runs in the fifth inning to stretch their lead to 7-4.
In the seventh inning, Southwestern sealed the victory with another burst of offense, highlighted by W. Johannsen's double that brought in two more runs, solidifying their lead at 9-4.
GAME 2 – Saturday 1:00 PM
In a thrilling matchup, it were the Builders who emerged victorious with an impressive 13-4 win. The game was characterized by powerful hitting and solid defensive play from both teams.
Saint Mary started the ball game by adding four runs to their score in the first inning. B. Roop kicked things off with an RBI after being hit by a pitch, followed by key hits from K. Wahwahsuc and others to bring the score to 4-0 early on.
However, the Builders showed their resilience in the second inning, quickly tying up the game at 4-4 thanks to notable contributions from W. Johannsen and C. Camacho.
In addition, the Builders continued to pile on the runs, with A. Brown, L. Penland, and others delivering crucial hits throughout the game.
The highlight of the match came in the seventh inning when T. Seboldt smashed a homer, extending Southwestern's lead to 8-4. From there, Southwestern College never looked back, maintaining their momentum, and adding to their lead in the later innings.
By the time the ninth inning rolled around, Southwestern had built an insurmountable lead, capped off by a sacrifice fly from Z. Boone to bring home another run, securing the 13-4 victory.
GAME 3– Saturday 4:00 PM
In a tightly contested baseball battle, the University of Saint Mary edged past Southwestern College with a final score of 5-4. Both teams showcased their offensive prowess, but it was Saint Mary who managed to come out on top in the end.
Southwestern started off strong in the first inning, with Z. Boone driving in the opening run with a single to left field, bringing L. Penland across the plate. However, the Saints quickly responded, with B. Turner's double down the right field line tying the game at 1-1.
The Saints continued their offensive onslaught in the first inning, adding three more runs thanks to key hits from B. Roop and A. Osorio, taking a 4-1 lead.
Undeterred, Southwestern fought back in the later innings, narrowing the gap with clutch hits from S. Espinoza, T. Seboldt, and L. Dincola, tying the game at 4-4 by the fifth inning.
The game remained deadlocked until the seventh inning when Sterling's B. Roop delivered a crucial double down the left field line, bringing in the decisive run that would ultimately seal the victory for Saint Mary.
