ST. LOUIS, Mo - The Moundbuilders secured their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Southwestern Christian University on a neutral court in St. Louis. The win also marks the first career victory at Southwestern for first-year head coach Ken Brokaw.
The Moundbuilders came out strong, taking the first set 25-14 behind a .500 hitting percentage. After dropping the second set 23-25, Southwestern rebounded to win the third set 25-22 and closed out the match with a dominant 25-13 performance in the fourth.
Gabi Theut led the Builders with 15 kills, while
Haley Shaw had 12 kills, and
Baylee York had 10 kills.
Hannah Weber was effective from the service line with three aces, and she also added two blocks along with
Kaylee Stiehl. Setter
Natalie Blaufuss dished out 21 assists, and
Avery Riedel led the defense with 14 digs.
Southwestern posted a .313 hitting percentage for the match, while limiting Southwestern Christian to just .120. The Builders recorded 54 kills to SCU's 34, setting the tone in their first win of the season.
The Builders, 1-1 overall, are immediately back in action, playing Harris-Stowe State University on their home floor.
