WINFIELD, Kan. – The Moundbuilders (0-2, 0-0) fell to the William Woods University Owls, 4-1, in a challenging matchup at Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
The Moundbuilders found themselves trailing early after a 17th-minute goal by William Woods' Charlie Williams. However, Southwestern responded just before halftime when
Connor Inlow netted the equalizer in the 45th minute, assisted by
Sami Miri, sending the teams into the break tied at 1-1.
In the second half, the Owls' offense proved too strong. Lubos Polacko scored the go-ahead goal in the 54th minute, followed by goals from Luis Pinto and David Fink in the 60th and 64th minutes, respectively, putting the game out of reach for Southwestern.
Southwestern goalkeeper
KJ Masso was tested throughout the match, making eight saves against a relentless William Woods attack. Despite his efforts, the Moundbuilders struggled to contain the Owls' offense, which registered 23 shots, 12 of them on target.
For Southwestern, Inlow's goal was the standout moment, while
Jack Bagley-Etheridge and
Marcos Benavidez contributed with solid performances, each recording shots on goal. The Moundbuilders managed 11 shots overall, with seven on target, but couldn't find the back of the net in the second half.
The loss drops Southwestern to 0-2 on the season. The Moundbuilders will look to rebound when they host Oklahoma Panhandle State University on September 14 at Richard L. Jantz Stadium, at 5pm.
