WINFIELD, Kan. – The Southwestern College women's basketball team secured a solid 56-48 win over Avila University on Friday afternoon at home.
Southwestern came out strong in the first quarter, leading 11-8, and maintained their advantage through the rest of the game. The Moundbuilders showed a balanced offensive effort with key performances from Jerranay Echols, who tallied 21 points and contributed 5 assists, and Christy Wiebe, who recorded 8 points and 9 rebounds.
In the second quarter, Southwestern extended their lead with a 17-point effort, holding Avila to just 9 points. Despite a late surge from the Golden Eagles, who scored 20 points in the fourth quarter, the Moundbuilders kept control, sealing the victory with a final score of 56-48.
Southwestern shot 21-of-65 from the field (32.3%) and had a strong rebounding performance with 58 boards. Avila struggled with their shooting efficiency, hitting just 19-of-73 shots (26%).
In addition to Echols' 21 points, the Moundbuilders got contributions from Allyson Frank (10 points) and Haven Mathews (11 points). Perla Hernandez and Macy Pond also played pivotal roles in Southwestern's victory with strong defensive efforts.
