SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Southwestern College faced a tough outing against Evangel University on Wednesday evening, falling 101-61 at AGFinancial Arena. The Moundbuilders struggled to contain Evangel's efficient offense, as the home team shot 56.5% from the field and dominated inside with 48 points in the paint.
Despite the loss, Southwestern saw a great performance from Macey Pond, who poured in a game-high 26 points, shooting 60% from the field and nailing six 3-pointers. Pond added two rebounds, three steals, and one assist in 36 minutes of action. Kennedy Ford contributed 13 points, hitting two shots from beyond the arc and grabbing five rebounds.
Callie Scott anchored the defense with nine rebounds and four steals, while Jerranay Echols added three points, two assists, and two steals in a solid bench performance.
Southwestern struggled offensively early, scoring just seven points in the opening quarter. The Moundbuilders picked up the pace in the second half, tallying 23 points in the final period, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.
Evangel was led by Ali Kamies, who scored 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting and grabbed three rebounds. Evin Montgomery added 16 points, including four 3-pointers, while Emily Recker finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
The Crusaders controlled the glass with a 45-25 rebounding advantage and took advantage of Southwestern's 21 turnovers, scoring 32 points off miscues. Evangel also showcased its depth, as their bench outscored Southwestern's reserves 58-25.
The Moundbuilders next game is at home on Saturday Jan 8 for their next matchup against McPherson College.
