Player Spotlight: Mikki Johnson Finding Balance, Passion, and Purpose Through Volleyball

WINFIELD, Kan. — For Southwestern College volleyball player Mikki Johnson, the court is more than a place to compete — it's where years of dedication, inspiration and personal growth come together.

A native of Aubrey, Texas, Johnson came to Southwestern on a volleyball scholarship, continuing a journey that began when she followed in her sister's footsteps.

"My sister played when she was in high school, and I've always looked up to her," Johnson said. "That's what got me started."

Johnson began playing volleyball in seventh grade, but it wasn't until her sophomore year of high school that she realized the sport could become her calling. Encouraged by her coach, she started to see her potential.

"My high school coach saw something in me and pushed me to go further," she said. "She's been the most influential person in my athletic career."

Player spotlightOff the court, Johnson is majoring in health science and hopes to earn a doctorate in physical therapy to work in a children's hospital.

"I've always wanted to help people," she said. "Physical therapy feels like the perfect way to combine that with my interest in health and movement."

Balancing academics, athletics and personal time takes careful planning — something Johnson handles with discipline.

"Creating a schedule helps a lot," she said. "I make sure to include time for classes, studying and practice, but I also make time for myself so I'm not stressed all the time."

When she has free time, Johnson enjoys drawing and listening to music. Her favorite shows — Jujutsu Kaisen and 1000-Lb Sisters — reflect her mix of energy and humor. If she could travel anywhere, Japan would be at the top of her list.

"I love the culture and anime," she said. "I'd love to learn how to speak Japanese someday."

On game days, Johnson focuses on staying relaxed and confident.

"I listen to music and think positive thoughts," she said. "Physically, I make sure to stretch, stay hydrated and see the trainer if needed."

She admits that managing the mental side of volleyball can be the toughest challenge.

"A few mistakes can make you think the worst of yourself," Johnson said. "But I handle it by talking to my teammates and coaches. They're always there to build me up, and I'm forever grateful for them."

One of her favorite memories so far is the alumni volleyball game.

"It was so fun playing with my girls and meeting players who came before us," she said. "It really reminded me how special this program is."

Johnson looks up to Nebraska volleyball standout Andi Jackson, admiring both her skill and character.

"She's an amazing athlete and seems like a great person too," Johnson said. "That's something I aspire to be — not just good at what I do, but someone others look up to."

As her time at Southwestern continues, Johnson's quiet determination and kind spirit make her a standout — on and off the court.
