WINFIELD, Kan. — The Southwestern College volleyball team will look to rebound from a tough stretch when they travel to Ottawa University on Wednesday night for a Conference matchup. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Ottawa, Kansas.
The Moundbuilders (8–14) (2–6 KCAC) are seeking consistency after falling to McPherson in straight sets on Saturday. Southwestern has been most successful in three-set contests this season, posting a 6–8 record in such matches, but has struggled to extend play, going 1–4 in four-set matches and 1–2 in five-setters.
Freshman outside hitter Mikki Johnson leads the attack with 181 kills (2.66 per set), while senior Autumn Bennett has added 178 kills at a .228 hitting clip. The Builders are hitting .139 as a team and averaging 10.4 kills per set.
Ottawa (6–11) (3–4 KCAC) enters the match coming off a straight-set win over Bethany on Saturday. The Braves have been strong at the net, averaging 2.1 blocks per set behind the play of Campbell Stark, who has totaled 63 blocks, and Lillian Holden, who has added 42. Stark also leads Ottawa offensively with 130 kills, while Hollie Peters and Bailee Nickel have combined for more than 220 kills on the season.
The Braves have held opponents to a .189 hitting percentage while hitting .161 themselves, relying on balanced defense led by Carson Schuman, who averages 4.27 digs per set.
Southwestern trails slightly in overall hitting efficiency and blocking numbers compared to Ottawa, but the Builders' serving game (1.84 aces per set) could be a factor against a Braves squad that averages 1.18 aces per set.
