WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College will look to start their KCAC slate on a strong note Saturday when the Moundbuilders host McPherson College at 3 p.m. inside Stewart Fieldhouse as part of the school's annual Military Appreciation Night.
Southwestern enters the matchup 4-0 after rolling through its non-conference schedule with an average winning margin of 34.3 points. The Builders have been dominant defensively, holding opponents to 54.8 points per game on 35% shooting. Teams are hitting just 23.7% from 3-point range against them. Southwestern has also controlled the boards, out-rebounding opponents 42.3 to 23.5 per game.
Senior guard Wyatt Bell and junior forward Evan Barber have led the charge. Bell is averaging 22.8 points per game, while Barber adds 15.5. The duo has powered a Southwestern offense that has scored efficiently and built early double-digit leads in every outing.
McPherson (3-2) arrives with momentum after a 42-point win over Baker University (Kan.) earlier this week. The Bulldogs, led by seventh-year coach T.J. Eskildsen, feature a balanced lineup that has six players averaging at least eight points. McPherson has knocked down 38 3-pointers through five games and is averaging 37.6 rebounds.
Saturday's game sets up as a battle between Southwestern's size and defense and McPherson's depth and perimeter shooting. The Bulldogs' ability to stretch the floor will test a Southwestern defense that has been one of the strongest in the NAIA to start the season.
With the program honoring veterans and active-duty service members throughout the afternoon, the Moundbuilders look to protect home court, keep their perfect start intact and deliver a strong performance in front of a meaningful crowd. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. in Stewart Fieldhouse.
