Southwestern Rallies in Closing Moments to Beat Avila 95-93

WINFIELD, Kan. — A wild, back-and-forth finish at Stewart Field House on Saturday ended with Southwestern College edging Avila 95-93 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Reid Jessen hit two free throws with two seconds left to finish the frenetic closing sequence and push the Moundbuilders past the Builders.

Southwestern carried a 50-41 lead into halftime behind efficient shooting and steady interior play, but Avila kept pace and turned the second half into a possession-by-possession fight. The Builders matched every run, setting up a final minute that swung in both directions.

Avila took a 93-91 lead with 34 seconds remaining when Logan Bishop scored at the rim. Southwestern responded immediately as Zach Hildago rose at the basket and hammered home a dunk with 16 seconds to play to tie it at 93. Avila's final possession came up empty, and after a rebound scramble near the buzzer, Jessen drew a foul and calmly knocked down both shots at the line to seal the two-point win.

Southwestern shot 50.8% from the field (33 of 65), went 8 of 22 from 3-point range and hit 21 of 27 free throws. Avila finished at 55% shooting (33 of 60), knocked down 7 of 20 from beyond the arc and went 20 of 26 at the stripe.

Nigel John led a balanced Southwestern attack with 18 points. Hildago posted a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, punctuated by the game-tying dunk in the final seconds. Austin Hilton added 16 points and hit four 3-pointers, while Isaac Hoberecht scored 14.

Avila was led by Xavier Kahube, who finished with a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds. Bishop added 20 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range, and Jason Ernest scored 17 as the Builders' late push fell short.

Southwestern returns to action Wednesday, Dec. 10, when the Moundbuilders travel to Bartlesville, Okla., for an 8 p.m. tipoff at Oklahoma Wesleyan University.
