WINFIELD, Kan. – The Evangel University women's basketball team held off a late push by Southwestern College to secure a 71-68 victory.
Evangel University set the tone early, outscoring Southwestern 19-11 in the first quarter. Strong defense and efficient shooting helped Evangel maintain a steady lead, going into halftime up 39-30. Carson Dillard led the charge with 16 points in the game, including three three-pointers.
Southwestern's Second-Half Push
Southwestern responded with an improved offensive effort in the third quarter, cutting into Evangel's lead. Haven Matthews fueled the comeback, finishing with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Christy Wiebe added a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, keeping the Moundbuilders within striking distance.
With the game on the line, Evangel made key defensive stops and converted crucial free throws. Despite outscoring Evangel 22-13 in the fourth quarter, Southwestern fell just short. Evangel capitalized on second-chance points and controlled the boards down the stretch to seal the win.
