WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College put together a well-rounded performance on both ends of the court, securing an 86-69 victory over Bethany College in a conference matchup at historic Stewart Fieldhouse.
The Moundbuilders (16-8, 10-8) set the tone early, using their size and efficiency to take control of the game. They built a 41-34 halftime lead before pulling away in the second half with a 45-point outburst. Southwestern shot an impressive 57.4% from the field (31-of-54) and dominated the rebounding battle, outworking Bethany 41-29 on the boards.
Zach Hidalgo led the way with a commanding double-double, finishing with 17 points and 15 rebounds while adding three blocks to anchor the defense.
Justin DeMaria provided a spark off the bench, scoring a team-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers, and going a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line.
Wyatt Bell contributed 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Evan Barber added 14 points and three assists.
Southwestern's inside presence was a key factor, outscoring Bethany 44-24 in the paint. The Moundbuilders also capitalized on their trips to the foul line, converting 18-of-20 free throws.
Bethany (10-13) struggled to keep pace, shooting just 35.8% from the floor (24-of-67). Kenny Haynes was the Swedes' top scorer, finishing with 19 points while connecting on five 3-pointers. Ellis Todd added 16 points and four rebounds, and Emmanuel Akpan tallied 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds.
The Swedes kept the game competitive in the first half behind their perimeter shooting, knocking down nine 3-pointers overall. However, their inability to generate consistent offense inside proved costly as Southwestern's defense forced tough shots and limited second-chance opportunities.
With the win, Southwestern improves its conference record and looks to build momentum heading into its next matchup. The Moundbuilders will return to action on Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., when they host Evangel University at Stewart Fieldhouse.
