WINFIELD, Kan. — Despite a strong fourth-quarter surge, Southwestern College was unable to overcome Bethany College, falling 90-70 in a KCAC matchup on at Stewart Field House.
Southwestern (3-16) started strong, outscoring Bethany 19-16 in the first quarter, but struggled offensively in the second and third quarters , allowing the Swedes (12-11) to take control. Bethany used a dominant inside presence and efficient shooting to pull away in the second half, ultimately sealing the road victory.
The Lady Moundbuilders were led by Christy Wiebe, who recorded a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Macy Pond added 17 points, including three makes from beyond the arc, while Haven Mathews contributed 13 points and two blocks. Despite Southwestern's defensive efforts, turnovers and rebounding struggles hampered their ability to keep pace with Bethany.
Bethany was paced by Janae Black-Harmon, who notched a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds. Jaden Newfarmer added 12 points and five blocks, while Kylie Dunn chipped in 10 points for the Swedes.
Bethany's defense was a key factor, as the Swedes recorded nine blocks and forced seven turnovers. Southwestern, which shot just 31.6 percent from the field (25-of-79), had difficulty converting opportunities in the paint, while Bethany capitalized with 58 points inside.
Southwestern will look to bounce back in its next game as they face Evangel at Stewart Feildhouse on Tuesday, Feb 11, at 5 p.m.
