WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern swept Randall in straight sets Thursday night inside Stewart Fieldhouse, securing a 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 victory to extend its winning streak to five matches. The run includes four three-set sweeps and one four-set victory, marking the Builders' best stretch of the season.
The opening set was tight early, with Randall trading points behind the hitting of Kimberly Phelps. Southwestern broke open a 13-12 game with a 6-1 run sparked by kills from Mikki Johnson and Autumn Bennett. A service ace from Reece Likes gave the Builders set point, and Bennett sealed it with a cross-court swing for the 25-19 win.
Southwestern's defense set the tone in the second frame. Senior defensive specialist Kalissa Ortega dug several tough swings during extended rallies, while setter Natalie Blaufuss kept the offense balanced. Macey Collier's quick kill in the middle capped a 4-0 surge that gave the Builders control. Southwestern held off Randall late to close the set 25-18.
Randall opened the third with energy and led 10-7 before the Builders answered with five straight points, highlighted by consecutive Collier kills and a block assist from Haylie Poole and Ashlyn Tag. Southwestern closed on a 6-2 run, with Johnson hammering the final point for a 25-19 victory and the sweep.
Southwestern finished with 36 kills on a .164 hitting percentage, led by consistent play across its starters. Bennett and Collier each tallied eight kills, with Collier hitting .375 and adding a dig. Johnson followed with seven kills on .333 hitting and chipped in a dig defensively. Poole supplied five kills and a block assist.
Blaufuss directed the offense with 17 assists and four digs, while Likes added 11 assists, a pair of aces, and one dig. Reece Likes also tallied both of Southwestern's service aces on the night, with the Builders committing no errors from the line.
In the back row, Ortega anchored the defense with 12 digs, while Avery Riedel collected 10 digs and chipped in two assists. Riley Valley added nine digs to round out a stout defensive effort that limited Randall to a .158 attack percentage.
The five-match win streak has featured four sweeps and one four-set win, a turnaround that has lifted the Builders to 5-8 after a 1-8 start.
Randall (1-2) was led by Phelps with nine kills and Alana Hutchins with 18 digs but could not overcome inconsistency and untimely service errors.
Southwestern returns to action Wednesday, September 24th , traveling to Leavenworth to face the University of Saint Mary. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
