WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern will look to build on a strong start to the indoor season when the Moundbuilders' men's and women's track and field teams compete at the Coach Wilson Invitational, hosted by Wichita State University on Friday and Saturday.
Southwestern's women enter the meet with early-season top marks led by senior Lauryn Peterson, who has posted the team's best times in both the 800 meters (3:06.77) and the mile (7:04.94). Sophomore Abigail Eckert has been the Moundbuilders' top sprinter so far with an 8.73 in the 60, while sophomore Malia Pearson has produced a 10.70-meter mark in the shot put. Senior Vanessa Mendoza has also provided points potential in the weight throw with a season-best 11.99 meters.
On the men's side, Southwestern has opened the 2025-26 indoor campaign with multiple event leaders across the sprints, distance races, and field events. Senior Christopher Collier-Surly owns the team's top time in the 60 (7.11), while sophomore Dominique Orosco leads the 400 at 53.29. In the middle distances, senior Jamell Sanchez has turned in the top 800 time (2:31.01) and mile (5:27.98).
The Moundbuilders have also shown depth in the distance events, with sophomore Derek Ponce-Gonzales posting the team's leading times in both the 3,000 (9:41.40) and 5,000 (18:30.19). In the hurdles, sophomore Manuel Reyes tops the roster in the 60 hurdles at 9.02.
Southwestern's field group has been paced by senior Lyrix Howard in the high jump (1.74m) and freshman JJ Crawford in both horizontal jumps, leading the long jump (6.54m) and triple jump (13.32m). Sophomore Emerson Williams has delivered the top throw marks with a 13.17m in the shot put and 11.76m in the weight throw.
The Coach Wilson Invitational is the latest stop on a schedule that has included the Friends University First-Chance Qualifier and the Washburn Alumni Invite earlier this indoor season.
