WICHITA, Kan. — Southwestern's men's and women's track and field teams continued their indoor season with a wide range of performances at the Coach Wilson Invitational, competing in sprints, middle distance races, relays, and multiple field events inside the Heskett Center.
The Moundbuilders' men were led on the track by senior Christopher Collier-Surly, who turned in a 7.04 in the 60-meter dash preliminaries. Dominique Orosco followed with a 7.21, Ben Patkowski ran 7.24, and Manuel Reyes clocked 7.45. Orosco also paced Southwestern in the 200 meters with a time of 23.62, while Patkowski finished in 24.61. Jamell Sanchez recorded 28.53, and Derek Ponce-Gonzales added 29.78.
In the middle distances, Jack Titgemeyer posted a 1:40.51 in the 600 meters. Sanchez ran 2:26.67 in the 800 and later competed in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 11:16.26. Ponce-Gonzales doubled in the distance events, running 5:12.24 in the mile and 10:32.62 in the 3,000.
Reyes represented Southwestern in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.80 and also competed in the long jump, posting a mark of 5.70 meters. JJ Crawford recorded a 13.27-meter mark in the triple jump. In the relay, Southwestern's 4x400 team of Orosco, Patkowski, Titgemeyer, and Reyes finished in 3:40.31. Lyrix Howard competed in the high jump, clearing 1.72 meters.
In the throws, Emerson Williams led the way with a 12.97-meter effort in the shot put and added a 12.10-meter mark in the weight throw. Anthony Mendoza posted 10.76 meters in the shot put and 10.51 in the weight throw.
On the women's side, sophomore Abigail Eckert highlighted the sprint group by running 8.55 in the 60-meter dash preliminaries and later clocking 29.00 in the 200 meters. Eckert also competed in the long jump, recording a 4.36-meter mark. In the middle distances, Lauryn Peterson ran 2:57.38 in the 800 meters.
Southwestern had multiple entries in the throwing events, led by Vanessa Mendoza. Mendoza posted 8.99 meters in the shot put and recorded a 12.07-meter mark in the weight throw. Malia Pearson added a 10.75-meter throw in the shot put and finished with a 9.46-meter mark in the weight throw.
SC will be back in action on Friday, February 13th, as the Builders head back to Wichita to compete in the KCAC Championships.
