WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern's men's and women's track and field teams will continue the early stages of the 2025-26 indoor season Saturday when they compete at the Friends University First Chance Qualifier.
The meet provides the Moundbuilders an early opportunity to build on marks recorded in December and establish momentum heading deeper into the indoor schedule.
On the men's side, Southwestern is expected to feature a strong sprint group. Christopher Collier-Surly returns after opening the season with a 7.11 in the 60 meters, while Ben Patowski and Dominique Orosco add depth in the short sprints following sub-7.25 performances. Dashawn Haskin brings early-season form to the 200 meters after running 23.18 in his first indoor outing.
Mid-distance runner Jamell Sanchez is slated to compete again after posting a 2:31.01 in the 800 meters, while Derek Ponce-Gonzales anchors the distance group after opening the season in the 5,000 meters.
Southwestern's men also expect contributions in the field events, led by high jumper Lyrix Howard, who cleared 1.74 meters earlier this season. JJ Crawford and Emerson Williams give the Moundbuilders options in the jumps and throws after productive debuts at Washburn.
The women's team enters the First Chance Qualifier looking to build consistency across multiple event groups. Lauryn Peterson leads the distance runners after opening the year with a 3:06.77 in the 800 meters, while additional depth is expected as the roster continues to gain competition experience.
In the throws, Malia Pearson and Vanessa Mendoza headline the group after recording early-season marks in the shot put and weight throw, respectively, and will look to improve on those performances Saturday.
The Friends University First Chance Qualifier serves as an important measuring stick for Southwestern as athletes chase qualifying marks and refine technique early in the season. Field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., with running events to follow later in the day.
