WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern dropped two of three games to Avila in its Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference-opening series at Broadway Sports Complex, falling 12-1 and 13-1 before salvaging the finale with a 6-4 victory.
In Thursday's opener, the Moundbuilders were limited to three hits in a 12-1 loss. R. Dorsey provided the lone highlight with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Avila broke the game open with seven runs in the third and added two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. P. Ramsey took the loss in the circle, while Avila's C. Schranz struck out 11 over seven innings.
Avila carried the momentum into Friday's first game, defeating Southwestern 13-1. The Eagles scored five runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to build an early cushion. N. Perez recorded a double for Southwestern, and the Moundbuilders again managed three hits. Avila capitalized on six Southwestern errors and drew seven walks in the contest.
Southwestern responded in the series finale with a 6-4 win to close the weekend. After trailing 4-3 in the sixth, the Moundbuilders rallied in the bottom half of the inning. S. Benz delivered a two-run triple down the right-field line to give Southwestern the lead and later scored on an error. Benz finished with two hits and two RBIs. J. Hensley pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, and B. Cross secured the victory with 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
The Moundbuilders move to 1-2 in KCAC play after the opening conference series.
SC will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon as the Builders host the William Penn University Statesmen for a seven-inning doubleheader at the Broadway Sports Complex. The first pitches are scheduled for noon and 4 p.m., respectively.
