Dorsey Leads Southwestern to Game 2 Win After William Penn Takes Opener

WINFIELD, Kan. — William Penn University and Southwestern College split a doubleheader Wednesday at the Broadway Sports Complex, with the Statesmen taking the opener 8-6 before the Moundbuilders responded with a 9-7 win in the nightcap.

Game 1 — William Penn 8, Southwestern 6

William Penn used a four-run sixth inning to rally past Southwestern in the opener.

The Statesmen got a two-run single from Abraham Arroyo to tie the game at 6 in the sixth, and Aiden North followed with a two-run double to give William Penn an 8-6 lead.

Arroyo finished with two RBIs, and North drove in two. McGwire Jephson had a hit and an RBI, and Keoni Young added an RBI single for William Penn. Shane Mailloux scored twice and collected two hits.

Southwestern took a 6-4 lead with a four-run fourth inning keyed by a two-run single from Raisean Avila-Dorsey. Brice Nittler and Nathan Perez added RBI singles in the rally.

Dorsey had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Moundbuilders. Nittler had three hits and an RBI, and Gabe Rodriguez doubled and drove in a run.

Right-hander Andrei Gordeev earned the victory for William Penn, allowing two hits over 3 2/3 scoreless innings while striking out 5 in relief.

Game 2 — Southwestern 9, William Penn 7

Southwestern bounced back in the nightcap, scoring three times in the sixth inning to capture a 9-7 win.

The Moundbuilders seized early control with a five-run first inning. Cole Van Stone delivered a two-run single to ignite the rally, Preston Carrillo added an RBI single, and Ayden Markovich scored on a wild pitch during the frame.

William Penn answered with four runs in the fourth to tie the game at 6. North singled home a run, and Ened Perez followed with a two-run double to even the score.

The Statesmen took a 7-6 lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Arroyo, but Southwestern regained the lead in the sixth. Dorsey's run-scoring single brought the tying run home before two additional runs scored on passed balls to make it 9-7.

Dorsey finished with two hits and two RBIs. Van Stone drove in two runs, and Carrillo added an RBI. Koda Larsen scored twice and had a hit for the Moundbuilders.
