WINFIELD, Kan. — On a night celebrating women's athletics, Oklahoma Wesleyan pulled away in the fourth quarter to defeat Southwestern College 66-53 Wednesday evening at Stewart Field House.
The contest was part of Ladies Night, recognizing National Girls and Women in Sports Day, with Female All-Conference honorees recognized at halftime.
The Lady Builders (4-19, 0-17) matched Oklahoma Wesleyan early, trailing just 15-14 after the opening quarter. Macey Pond set the tone early, scoring nine first-quarter points that included two 3-pointers and three free throws as Southwestern stayed competitive from the opening tip.
Offense was harder to come by in the second quarter for the Lady Builders, who managed just two field goal in the period. Oklahoma Wesleyan (9-14, 4-13) took advantage to build a 24-20 halftime lead.
Pond carried Southwestern offensively throughout the night, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Lily Blankenship added 10 points off the bench to give the Lady Builders a second double-digit scorer. Emma Parker contributed seven points, while Martha De La Rosa added six points and five assists.
The Eagles gained separation in the third quarter, extending the lead to 47-36 behind efficient shooting and second-chance opportunities. Southwestern continued to battle, opening the fourth quarter with baskets from Pond and Blankenship to cut into the margin.
Oklahoma Wesleyan answered with timely perimeter shooting in the final period. Taliyah Harris opened the quarter with a 3-pointer, and Ashlyn Baker knocked down a pair of late 3s as the Eagles pushed the lead to 17 with just over two minutes remaining.
Baker and Sophia Regalado led Oklahoma Wesleyan with 12 points apiece, while Harris and Gracie Alexander finished with 10 each.
Southwestern returns to conference action Saturday, Feb. 7, traveling to Bethany College (Kan.) for a 1 p.m. matchup in Lindsborg.
