Southwestern Battles but Falls to McPherson

WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern dropped both games of a Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at McPherson on April 18, falling 6-1 in the opener before an 11-1 run-rule loss in the finale.

In Game 1, Southwestern (8-32, 2-22 KCAC) struck early but could not sustain offensive momentum in the 6-1 defeat. The Moundbuilders finished with six hits and drew four walks but left eight runners on base. McPherson broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the fourth and added three more in the sixth to pull away.

Lainey Hardman led Southwestern at the plate with two hits, while Mackenzie Reinert scored the team's lone run. Eliana Ortiz drove in the Moundbuilders' only run of the game.

Faith Campbell went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs on 11 hits while striking out two over six innings.

In the second game, McPherson used a big middle innings surge to secure an 11-1 win in five innings. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the second, four in the third and five in the fourth to take control.

Southwestern recorded seven hits in the game, led by Tiara Henry's two-hit performance. Reinert drove in the Moundbuilders' lone run, while Fayth Howard, Gabi Leyva, Aubrey Allison and Ellie Kucera each added a hit.

Emma Willesden took the loss in the circle, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits over four innings.

Southwestern will look to bounce back as it continues conference play.
