BALDWIN CITY, Kan. — The Southwestern College men's and women's track and field teams turned in several strong performances, highlighted by multiple personal-record efforts, Saturday at the Zach Kindler Invitational hosted by Baker University.
On the men's side, Dominique Orosco led the Moundbuilders in the sprints, placing 10th in the 100 meters with a time of 10.99 seconds and adding a 22.70 finish in the 200 meters. His 100-meter mark represented a personal best on the day.
Freshman JJ Crawford delivered one of the top performances of the meet for Southwestern, winning the long jump with a leap of 7.00 meters (22 feet, 11.75 inches). The jump marked a new personal record and secured the event title.
Elsewhere, Manuel Reyes placed eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (58.56), while the 4x400-meter relay team of Orosco, Jack Titgemeyer, Ben Patkowski, and Reyes finished ninth in 3:38.20.
For the women, Southwestern's throwers highlighted the meet with multiple personal-best efforts. Vanessa Mendoza recorded a pair of PRs, throwing 34.52 meters (113-3) in the discus and 38.32 meters (125-9) in the hammer.
Malia Pearson also posted a personal best in the discus with a throw of 35.68 meters (117-1), finishing ninth, while adding a 33.50-meter mark in the hammer.
On the track, Abigail Eckert placed 10th in the 100 meters (13.67) and ninth in the long jump (4.36 meters), while Lauryn Peterson competed in both distance events, finishing the 800 meters in 3:08.35 and the 1500 meters in 6:29.66.
Southwestern will look to build upon recent success as the Builders head to the KCAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday, April 30th, and Friday, May 1st, at Friends University in Wichita.
