Drew Smith

Drew Smith is in his first season as Defensive Coordinator for the Moundbuilders. A familiar face to the program, Smith moves into this key leadership role after serving as a graduate assistant and making a significant impact on the team's defensive success.

A native of Paola, Kansas, Smith has spent the past two years working with the defensive backs and linebackers, while also assisting with special teams and serving as defensive coordinator and head coach for JV/reserve games. His leadership contributed to the success of multiple all-conference linebackers, coaching four in 2023 and five in 2024.

Smith comes from a strong football background, as his father, Mike Smith, is the head football coach at Paola High School. As a player, Drew was a standout linebacker and long snapper for Southwestern from 2018-2022, earning three All-KCAC selections while helping the Moundbuilders secure back-to-back KCAC championships and NAIA playoff appearances. He was also a Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete and a KCAC Scholar-Athlete, demonstrating excellence both on the field and in the classroom.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Southwestern College (2022), where he graduated with a 3.74 GPA and was a four-time Dean's List honoree. He recently completed his Master of Education in School Leadership in December 2024, earning a 4.0 GPA.

In his new role as Defensive Coordinator, Smith will continue to bring his passion for the game and deep understanding of the program to the coaching staff. His recruiting experience spans key areas in Kansas (Wichita/KC Metro) and Texas (Dallas/Houston), helping to bring top talent to Winfield.

"We are thrilled to have Drew step into this leadership role," said Coach Brad Griffin. "His experience as both a player and a coach at Southwestern, along with his ability to develop talent and build relationships, makes him a great fit for our staff. He knows what it takes to win in this program, and we're excited for the future with him leading our defense."
