Box Score WINFIELD, Kan. – The Southwestern College men's soccer team drove up north to Wichita, Kan. to play the Falcons of Friends University on Saturday evening. After what was a torrid start for Friends, the Moundbuilders battled back, but could not hold the tie for long. The Falcons ended up winning the tightly-contested game by a final score of 2-1.
The game started off with a heavy possession advantage for the Falcons. After ten minutes, the Builders finally began to be a bit more aggressive and showed offensive prowess with shots by Mamadou Diarra, Nalan Kentner, and Hector Hernandez.
For the rest of the half, Southwestern and Friends both had a fair amount of chances. The Builders led the first half in shots with a 6-4 margin, but nobody was able to finish their opportunities.
The Falcons roared out of the locker room and into the lead in the early going of the second half. In the 47th minute of the game, Yushin Kitada scored after a corner kick by Guilherme Oliveira to open the scoring at 1-0.
A few minutes went by, and the Moundbuilders again were able to find their rhythm. Shots by Coby Stroud, Mamadou Diarra, and Reuben Kadanthottu put pressure on the Falcons goalkeeper and showed that the Builders were still in the game.
It was the 84th minute, when Connor Inlow blasted the ball from twenty-five yards into the top left corner of the goal to tie the game 1-1 with five minutes left to play. It was the first goal of the freshman's Southwestern career.
However, Friends was able to jump in front again in the 89th minute of the game, when Sora Shibata scored a header after a corner by Guilherme Oliveira to win the game.
The Builders (3-5-2, 0-3-2 KCAC) will now prepare to face Bethel College on Wednesday night at 8:30 PM at Richard L. Jantz Stadium in Winfield, Kan. The Builders hope to finally earn their first KCAC win for this season.
