WINFIELD, Kan. — Southwestern College men's soccer returns to action Saturday, Sept. 5, as the Moundbuilders travel to Hastings, Nebraska, to take on Hastings College at 11 a.m.
Southwestern enters the matchup 0-1 in non-conference play after opening the season against ranked Northwestern College. The Builders fell 2-1 despite holding the lead for more than half of the match.
With several new faces in the Southwestern lineup this season, the opener offered an early look at the group's potential. The Builders showed their ability to compete against a strong opponent while displaying versatility and quality across the pitch.
Defender Nicola Antiglio scored Southwestern's lone goal against Northwestern, finding the back of the net off a long throw-in from Cooper Bates. Captain Adrian Gimenez continues to provide experience and leadership in the back line, while freshman goalkeeper Franco Guazzotti put together an impressive performance in his college debut.
Southwestern will look to build on that performance as it faces a Hastings team that enters Saturday's contest 0-2 overall.
The Broncos' most recent matchup came against Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Kansas Wesleyan. Hastings carried a lead into halftime after senior midfielder Jake Watt scored in the 34th minute. Goalkeeper Ethan Watkins played all 90 minutes in goal and recorded one save.
Saturday's matchup will also be a rematch from early last season when Southwestern and Hastings met in a five-goal contest. The Broncos came away with a 3-2 victory.
Hastings opened the scoring in the fifth minute on a goal from returning sophomore Johnny Pedroza. Southwestern responded with goals from Jack Bagley-Etheridge in the 20th minute and Connor Inlow in the 25th to take the lead. Pedroza struck again in the 51st minute before Tim Berger scored the eventual game-winner for Hastings.
After showing plenty of promise in its season opener, Southwestern will look to turn that performance into its first victory of the 2026 season as the Builders continue their non-conference schedule on the road.
