Box Score WINFIELD, Kan. – It was the first gameday of the year for the Southwestern College men's soccer team on Wednesday night, as they hosted John Brown University. After a promising first half of play, the Moundbuilders were unable to hold off a comeback effort from the Eagles, falling 6-1 to the visiting club.
Southwestern scored the first goal of the game, as Mamadou Diarra converted a penalty kick in the 4th minute to put the Builders out front in the early going. The penalty kick was given after Wilber Landaverde ran into the opponent's box and was taken down by a John Brown defender.
Unfortunately for the Moundbuilders, John Brown was prepared well to make a comeback, as they scored the equalizer in the 24th minute. A great possession play helped the Eagles to get into the Builders half to find the back of the net.
For the rest of the first half of the game, the Moundbuilders were the more dominant team with nine shots compared to four shots for the eagles. In addition, the eagles only had one corner in the first half while the Builders had six.
The second half did not start in favor of the Builders, as Marco Brizuela scored his first goal for the Golden Eagles in the 51st minute. Brizuela, who walked up to take a free kick, subsequently curved it into the bottom-left of the goal frame to make the score 2-1 for JBU.
The Eagles kept pushing towards the SC goal and had a total of fifteen shots in the second period compared to the Builders lone attempt on frame. They would then tack on another goal to their tally when Christian Marroquin scored on a thirty-yard blast in the 66th minute of the game. Only six minutes later, in the 72nd minute, John Brown added another goal. The salvo was fired by Jacob Zamarron, making the score 4-1.
At that point the Eagles were dominating the game. It continued in the 80th minute of the game, as the Eagles would add another goal after a mistake by the Builders. The gaffe allowed a simple tap-in goal. Finally, Zamarron sealed it for good in the 86th minute, scoring his second goal of the match and pushing the final score of the game to 6-1.
Mamadou Diarra was the only SC attacker with five shots and the only goal scorer for the Builders.
Joshua Eibl had a difficult day in net for the Moundbuilders, as he faced ten shots on goal, and allowed four goals to reach the back of the net for the JBU. He was relieved by Jose Macias for the latter stages of the match.
The Builders (0-1-0) will return to the pitch for another non-conference billing against Southwestern Assemblies of God University this Saturday, September 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Waxahachie, Texas. It will be the second of five games before the start of the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) slate.
